I'm continuing to talk about transitioning from service by getting the perspective of a female service member who found that transitioning from active duty to the reserves and going back to active duty worked for her for a time in her life. Transition from service never looks the same for everyone, but we do talk about some things a service member can do to help themselves and others.

Mandy Snell is the managing director of Reboot Strategy. She is a Project Manager who loves helping business owners get the right things done, so they have time to do the things they actually want to do. A United States Naval Academy graduate, Mandy started her naval career leading 100+ person teams, managing ship operational and maintenance scheduling. She then transitioned into the Intelligence community as a Reservist, where she spent over a decade helping seasoned military leaders assess their operating environment. She really found her niche as a Reservist, implementing new programs by reorganizing existing teams. Mandy now focuses on helping small business owners use their unique qualities to develop and refine their own best practices. She excels at teaching others how to build and retain high-performance teams and particularly enjoys mentoring women in male-dominated industries. As a veteran and military spouse, she also has a soft spot for helping military members and spouses make successful transitions as they leave the service.

The subject of military spouses "serving" too can be quite controversial and divide many in the military community. In this episode, I talk to one MilSpouse author that says "they serve too." We discussed the many ways that military families are often overlooked in support of the service member. We also talked about ways to bridge the gap between the military and civilian worlds.

Chantel Olson is an author, speaker and coach. Her new book is entitled "Homefront Warriors -- Not all warriors wear a uniform," an international bestseller. Her mission is to bring awareness to the Homefront Warriors, the spouses, children, parents, etc., left at home when their loved one is serving in the military. She founded the Homefront Warrior Foundation to bring awareness to the many issues military families face. In addition, she designed a special dog tag, based on the military tags, that represents the Homefront Warriors.

This episode is all about a different kind of love story that you may not hear as much about in the military community. Since "Don't Ask Don't Tell" has been repealed, lesbian and gay couples are able to live their lives without fear. But what was it like before that? And what is it like now? I talk to one half of a military couple (Ashley) about their love story and the unique point of view of many LGBTQ military families.

Ashley Broadway-Mack is the President and founding board member of the American Military Partner Association (AMPA). It was through AMPA that Ashley found her new passion to assist other LGBT military families by working through the existing inequalities we face. Through her over 20 years as a military spouse, she is able to combine the traditions of the Army, while moving towards its vision of tomorrow. She is honored to serve as the President of AMPA where she leads the organization in a strategic mission of education, advocacy, and support for our modern military families. Ashley was recently awarded the Secretary of the Army Public Service Award by the Honorable Eric K. Fanning and has received the Commander’s Award for Public Service by Lieutenant General Darrell Williams. Before co-founding AMPA, Ashley taught elementary school for 13 years, specializing in dyslexia, English as a Second Language, and children with reading difficulties. She currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia with her spouse Heather and their children, Carson and Carley.

Being in the midst of military life, you and your family may not be thinking about transitioning out because you're just trying to survive. Or you may be thinking about it constantly, waiting for that day until you can say goodbye to the nomad lifestyle. Either way it's always good to have a plan and think ahead about what you will do in life after the military. In this episode, I talk to Doug Nordman an expert at transitioning out of military service and helping others to think through all of their options once they feel their time in service is up.

Doug Nordman served for 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy’s submarine force and retired in 2002 at the age of 41. He and his spouse, a retired Navy Reservist, reached financial independence in the late 1990s on a high savings rate. They’ve lived in Hawaii for over 29 years, and their daughter was born & raised on Oahu. These days Doug enjoys surfing, slow travel, writing, reading, home improvement, and more surfing. Doug is the author of “The Military Guide To Financial Independence And Retirement” and founder of The-Military-Guide.com. (He donates all of his writing revenues to military-friendly charities.) Their daughter and her spouse are both active-duty Navy, so military personal finance is an important family topic... almost as important as surfing.
